How to get booked at the Seahorse on the weekend
Opportunity for new bands
Think you have what it takes to play on a main Halifax stage? It takes more than just musical talent – you have to show your business savvy too. Advertising, bringing in fans and acting professionally are all equally as important.
Music Nova Scotia is fostering a program so new bands can play on the Seahorse stage and prove they’re good enough to open for a weekend show.
What do you do?
1. Make sure your Music Nova Scotia membership is up to date. (www.musicnovascotia.ca/join)
2. Contact Troy Arseneault to book a New Music Tuesday slot. Send him a link to your music and some info about your band.
3. Once you’re booked, use facebook, myspace, twitter, postering – whatever you can – to get friends and fans to come to the show. The more people who report at the door that they’re there to see you, the better chance you’ll have of being booked again for a weekend gig.
4. Play the show – come on time, bring the right gear, load-in and load-out efficiently and put on your BEST SHOW!
5. Follow up with Troy to see how things went and see if you’ll be picked to play a weekend gig!
Pay scale – 1st band (newbies) – plays for drinks, 2nd band (just breaking in) - $50 Headline band (nearly there) - $200
Sounds like a lot of work? It is. But hard work is what pays off…as long as you’re good!
About New Music Tuesdays: Every Tuesday since March 4th, 2008 hundreds of musicians, fans and industry professionals have come to the Seahorse for Music Nova Scotia Open Mic Night to take in new music and socialize. The format provided a stage for singer-songwriters and one band each week to perform. In September, 2009 the Warped Tour Battle of the Bands filled The Seahorse every week for a month. Between the audience reaction and the number bands who wanted to play, Music Nova Scotia collaborated with The Seahorse and in response, created the revamped New Music Tuesdays, focusing solely on bands.
Currently, New Music Tuesdays features new artists every week, offering a main Halifax stage for new artists to cut their teeth at performing.
Dozens of artists have been discovered by industry professionals at Music Nova Scotia’s Tuesday nights at the Seahorse. From recording gigs to festival bookings, artists have found success by playing on the Music Nova Scotia stage.
