Export Development Program
EXPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
In partnership with The Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Music Nova Scotia has established the Export Development Program for Music. Each year $300,000 is distributed to musicians and music industry professionals in a cycle of four deadlines. The focus of this program is on supporting Nova Scotians who are traveling and/or marketing outside of Nova Scotia with various export projects.
Two programs, the Travel and Tour Initiative and the Marketing Support Initiative, exist to facilitate access to funds, with the Music Nova Scotia Program Officer available to offer guidance with preparation of proposals. Eligible applicants can receive up to a maximum of 50% of their eligible budget with a limit of $7,500 per project.
Music Nova Scotia’s goal through the EDP is to ensure that the music industry in Nova Scotia continues to grow and develop into a sustainable and profitable industry. Music Nova Scotia realizes this steady succession of investments will allow beneficiaries to react more quickly to business opportunities in their markets giving Nova Scotian musicians and industry professionals more frequent work outside of Nova Scotia. Cultural industries are Nova Scotia’s greatest resource and the music sector plans to lead the way toward realizing the export potential of our products.
One of the EDP’s tactics for ensuring the growth of Nova Scotia’s music industry is to recognize the two stages of export development-Exporting and Export Ready. Applicants already working regularly outside of the province (Exporting) are considered by a separate panel from those who are beginning (Export Ready). This division allows the program to significantly invest in exporting applicants who have market-breaking projects operating at a larger scale while maintaining a strong support of export ready applicants who are up and coming. For example, a singer-songwriter who is taking her first trip to Central Canada and a band touring across a country with a platinum selling artist are judged against their peers and not each other.
Another tactic employed by the program is recognizing that more than one project may be underway at one time. As such, an applicant may submit up to four project proposals (two projects per program) each deadline. This enables musicians and industry professionals to enter new or under developed markets with more frequency and in response to various opportunities.
Nova Scotian musicians have traveled all around the world with the support of the EDP, and success stories are continually being reported to Music Nova Scotia.
Please note that we have transitioned to an online application system. Emailed and paper applications will no longer be accepted. The new online system is easy to use will aid in the administration of the program.
