THE DEAN OF JAZZ AND A GENIUS TO CALL OUR OWN
Canadian Greats Nimmons'n'Braid Are Coming to Halifax

HALIFAX, NS - If you have ever wanted to hear what great Canadian jazz composer-performers sound like when playing without a net, in a gorgeous and acoustically brilliant location, then Friday, October 1st is the day your task list becomes one line shorter Phil Nimmons and David Braid, The Dean of Jazz and the Jazz Genius to Call Our Own, are the duo to begin and continue your experience of in-the-moment composed jazz.

"Nimmons'n'Braid is a great physical representation of what jazz is about: traditions meeting and fusing with contemporary approaches," says Laura 'Lulu' Healy, Artistic Director of JazzEast.  "The qualities that make this duo stand-out is how they handle melody as well as their deft ability to spontaneously compose."

Nimmons'n'Braid, clarinetist and pianist, first collaborated in 2004 when they recorded a live concert in a church in Dundas, Ontario.  The result was Beginnings, a rare, unedited recording of acoustic jazz
critically acclaimed for its truly live nature and for the successful meeting of two great musicians.  "Even though Nimmons and Braid are two generations apart their collaboration exhibits no audible gaps," says Healy.  "It's remarkable."  Now, in 2010, in a church in Halifax, local jazz fans will get to see this fusion in a setting that matches the genesis of the project.

Clarinetist Phil Nimmons is the most significant name in Canadian jazz (after the late Oscar Peterson) and David Braid's rising star is consistently being noted.  Nimmons has received the moniker of The Dean of Jazz due to his endless contribution to the formal education of Canadian jazz musicians and for his lessons from the airwaves and stage as a former CBC radio performer (50's-60's) and as a touring musician (Nimmons'n'Nine).  His stage partner, David Braid, has a natural style and abilities that have made him a player of choice.  As Doug Ramsey from Rifftides explains, "Braid's tone, touch, chord voicings and imagination make him one of the most interesting new pianists I've encountered in a long time."

Tickets are $22 ($20 seniors and students, $17 JazzEast members) and are available through Ticketpro online at ticketpro.ca, phone 1-888-311-9090 and at any of their many outlets.  For more information, visit jazzeast.com, call JazzEast at 492-2225 or email info@jazzeast.com.

If you enjoy a great Songwriters’ Circle, then please join us for Ceilidh for Critters this September 26th at 2PM.

For one reasonably priced ticket, you get to hear four of Nova Scotia’s best songwriters onstage at the Westin Hotel in downtown Halifax.

This year we will welcome back veteran songwriter Laura Smith, who was a favourite of the well-loved CBC Radio host Peter Gzowski, and twice Juno nominated.

Laura will be joined by three of Nova Scotia's most promising emerging talents: Ryan MacGrath, Laura Merrimen, and Mike Trask.

It’s the first - and maybe the only - chance to see these four great singer / songwriters on the same stage.

5. Daily Digital News from Music Ally: Liveblog: Apple’s Autumn Music Event

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are turning brown. The sun is setting noticeably earlier. Wasps are in a mean mood. And Apple is holding its annual music-themed product launch.

We’re focusing on the latter, blogging from the London simulcast of Apple’s event – the real thing is happening in San Francisco.

We’ll keep you posted on the key music announcements tonight, so keep refreshing after 10am PDT / 6pm BST. We’re expecting a new iPod touch and possibly a new iPod nano, some changes to iTunes – although possibly not the long-rumoured cloud locker version – a refresh for the Apple TV set-top box that may include iOS apps, and stats on all things iPhone and iPad.

Visit www.musically.com for this story and more.
