3. Update from JazzEast

*A JazzEast member was rightfully dismayed that I did not mention the grand, extremely lovely acceptance of Jazz Album of the Year from the ECMA by Gypsophilia.  It was a charming moment and a well deserved win.

*There is a Twitter Jazz Network!  I kid you not.  It is a collection of blogs, such as A Blog Supreme, and links to all of the cool sites you would want to know about.  Even if you have never blogged, you have read.  I encourage you to make your way.

*Thom Yorke of RadioHead has unintentionally helped jazzhead parents make their favourite music relevant to kids.  According to NPR Jazz & Blues, young trumpeter Christian Scott is making way with his arrangement of the Brit band's "The Eraser." ...more

* For those who plan to go to the Cuban dinner concert at Onyx next Friday (March 26, 7:30pm), make sure you reserve a spot early (428 5680).  That's a tip for you.

HOT TICKETS

From January to April, JazzEast is presenting more than 30 concerts and workshops.  These are the latest hot ticket announcements.

Special notes: The Lion's Pass was put on sale last week.  For a value of $60 (five concerts), you pay $35.  It's a deal indeed.

One more reason to roar at the end of the week...Sageev Oore's Silent Film & Piano concerts x2.

Sageev's shows will be the most joy filled events of the Lion festival.  His selection of films (Keaton and Chaplin) perfectly suit his own character--he may not waddle or be perpetually falling, but his personality does inspire laughter and simple hearted pleasure--and the wide-open venue of St. Paul's provides plenty of space for everyone to let the mind go.  At the matinee, children are welcome to be free willed, and at the night time show, adults are encouraged to sit and reconnect with the inner-self that does not heed the calls of stress but delights in the craft of playing.

As a pianist, Sageev is one of those natural musicians everyone marvels over, and as a composer he is one of the most unpredictable.  His varied background--funk, jazz, Latin, klezmer, pop--reflects his wondering spirit and attraction to keeping it alive and engaging.  His music has won him awards and invitations to perform with Canadian notables, such as Gordon Downie (Tragically Hip), David Buchbinder (Odessa/Havana), Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band.

We hope you are able to pop in after the farmer's market with your family (Lulu timed it perfectly to enable this possibility) or make a really nice spring night of it and try something sweet, energetic and different.

TICKETS Sageev Oore's Silent Film & Piano tickets can be purchased at Ticketpro.ca or 1 888 311 9090.  Remember, if you are a member, then you may contact JazzEast directly for purchasing, 902 492 2225.  For up to date information click here.

Plus, do not forget to keep on top of our special programming with the Halifax Public Libraries, namely Jazz Appreciation Month, and the always creatively minded Creative Music Workshop sessions.  This year's Atlantic Jazz Festival is July 9-17 and the Creative Music Workshop Summer Intensive is July 4-17.  Any updates will be mentioned here and posted on jazzeast.com.

5. Daily Digital News from Music Ally: YouTube/Viacom lawsuit documents are out and in the wild

Yesterday saw the unsealing of a huge mass of documents and filings relating to Viacom’s $1bn copyright infringement lawsuit against YouTube. At issue is how aware YouTube’s executive team were of copyright infringement on the site, and what steps they took to prevent it.

Viacom’s submission includes evidence of emails between YouTube’s team in 2005 and 2006, which appear to show the site’s co-founders admitting that 80% of user traffic depended on infringing videos, and that some of these videos had even been uploaded by co-founder Jawed Karim.

However, YouTube chief counsel Zahavah Levine has hit back with a blog post claiming that Viacom “continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, evven while publicly complaining about its presence there”. He also reiterates that Viacom tried to buy YouTube before it was acquired by Google.

Visit www.musically.com for this story and more.

7. Choirs Celebrate Diversity on International Day Against Racism

When everyone joins in our song
And together singing in harmony
That's when we'll be free
(from Oscar Peterson's Hymn to Freedom)

When Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, one of the world's foremost jazz musicians, wrote Hymn to Freedom, he might not have imagined it being sung by three choirs in Nova Scotia (one predominantly black, one mostly white and the third a multicultural choir of new Canadians), but he would have been pleased!

On Sunday, March 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., haligonia.ca, Halifax's hyper-local online broadcaster will live stream Singing in Harmony, as three choirs join their voices to celebrate the rich diversity of Nova Scotia. The choirs include the ISIS Singers (Immigrant Settlement Association), the Studio Singers (Chester), and the Sanctified Brothers (men's gospel choir under the direction of Wallace Smith Jr.) plus members of the Hallelujah Praise Choir and the Emmanuel Baptist Choir.

In addition, Nova Scotians representing black, white, French and First Nations will join the singing and present performances.  Soloists include Mi'kmaq drummer Nathan Sack, Pat Watson, Marko Simmonds and Warren Laws.

Choir members and haligonia.ca invite viewers to start watching Singing in Harmony at 5:00 p.m. live, as the event begins.

Singing in Harmony, directed by Dawn Harwood-Jones of Pink Dog Productions Inc. and haligonia.ca, is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and sponsored by haligonia.ca and ISIS (Immigrant Settlement and Integration Services.

Pink Dog Productions Inc. is the 'go to' video production company for 'make-a-difference' videos for fund-raising, creating awareness and educating people about not-for-profit charities, arts organizations and special community projects sponsored by the federal or provincial governments. (www.pinkdog.ca)

FOR BROADCAST USE:

Join three choirs on the International Day Against Racism as they sing Oscar Peterson's Hymn to Freedom and other selections, Sunday, March 21 at 5:00 p.m. online at www.haligonia.ca.  Singing in Harmony will feature Mi'kmaq drummer Nathan Sack, Pat Watson, Marko Simmonds and Warren Laws, and choirs including the ISIS Singers, the Studio Signers from Chester, and the men's gospel choir, the Sanctified Brothers with members of the Hallelujah Praise Choir and the Emmanuel Baptist Choir.
