The Flakes
An Alternative Indigo Rock Band from Halifax Nova Scotia.
The Flakes are a four piece band from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
They abandoned their childhood dream of forming a barbershop quartet one day when a strong gust of wind blew their 50’s style caps into the harbour. Distraught at their misfortune, the boys played until their fingers bled. In a moment that can only be described as fate, the funk came upon them and blessed them with infinite wisdom. They drank their funk shakes eagerly, producing an alt-rock sound with unique flair only made possible by their newfound powers.

Blue Spirits w/ Tiffinie Laing
Friday, June 29, 2018 - 10:00 to Saturday, June 30, 2018 - 01:00

Making their Carleton debut, Blue Spirits packs an extra punch for this one-off performance. The soulful fivesome will be joined by powerhouse vocalist Tiffinie Laing (Unidentified Funk Object) for a set of classic 90’s R&B hits. The concert will feature another special guest in saxophonist James Shaw (Goat Stories, Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound).

Blue Spirits sounds like a modern riff on Chet Baker. Fronted by singer/trumpeter Paul St-Amand, their sound blends blue-eyed soul, cool jazz, classic R&B, blues, and indie folk. Outstanding original tunes mingle with stunning takes on Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Hank Williams, Eric Clapton, Amos Lee, Elvis Costello, and (of course) Baker. Last year the band released their debut album "Liquid Courage", which scored a NS Music Award nomination for Jazz Recording of the Year.

Blue Spirits is Paul St-Amand (trumpet, flugelhorn & vocals), Kyle Varley (keyboards & vocals), Ross Avey (guitar), Luke Arsenault (bass), and Charles Urich (drums).
