Halifax jazz band Blue Spirits will release their debut album Liquid Courage online June 30th, with a CD release party Friday, July 7th at The Local. Recorded at New Scotland Yard Studio, Liquid Courage features seven original jazz tunes ranging from smoky ballads to funk-infused jams and New Orleans second line grooves.

The album is available for preview and pre-order now at bluespirits.bandcamp.com.

Fronted by trumpeter/vocalist Paul St-Amand, Blue Spirits sounds like an updated spin on Chet Baker, blending cool jazz, blues, bop, funk, and hip-hop into a soulful stew. The band also features saxophonist James Shaw, guitarist Ross Avey, bassist Matt MacLennan, and drummer Brendan Melchin. Andrew MacKelvie (saxophones) and Andrew Jackson (trombone) also appear on Liquid Courage.

Liquid Courage has been praised by prominent Halifax musicians who have previewed the album. Guitarist and educator Geordie Haley wrote, “Wonderful original music in all the modern jazz genres. Have a listen for some great surprises!” The album features six instrumentals and one vocal, with writing contributions by St-Amand, Avey, and Melchin.

Blue Spirits will also appear at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival on Saturday, July 15th at 1PM on the Hydrostone Stage. Additional concert dates are planned for the summer and fall. Visit bluespirits.ca for a complete performance schedule.
