Music Nova Scotia Updates to the Investment Programs

Dear Nova Scotia Music Community,

It is an understatement to say that COVID-19 has upended the music industry. Many of Music Nova Scotia’s Investment programs are currently untenable with daily event cancellations and current travel restrictions.

Music Nova Scotia has been consulting frequently with the province, industry leaders, and artists to assess where current opportunities and needs exist in our sector and how best to respond.

As a result of this consultation, Music Nova Scotia will make the following changes to the June investment round and also announce several new initiatives.

Changes to June 15 Investment Round:

-Tour and Showcase programs are cancelled for the June 15 round

-The Developing Songwriter program, which had been moved from March 15 to June 15, will be delayed again until September 15

-The Mentorship program will proceed. However, applicants must consult with the Investment Program manager prior to application

-The Marketing program will proceed as normal

New Programs and Funding:

Due to the travel restrictions created by COVID-19, artists and industry have the opportunity to use this time to invest in recorded music, professional development and training, and new methods of content delivery. The following programs and funding changes are designed to support these initiatives.

For new programs (Songwriter/Producer Mentorship Program and Artist III, Artist II, and Export Ready Business Capacity Program), Music Nova Scotia will provide additional details re: program guidelines and application deadlines by mid-June.

Please note: for all programs, COVID-19 related government restrictions must be followed and applicants will be expected to outline clearly how their project adheres to current restrictions.

Additional Funding for Artist Development

Music Nova Scotia will make an additional $24,000 available in the Artist Development program, which will allow us to fund approximately 8 additional Artist Development projects. The deadline for Artist Development is June 15.

Songwriter/Producer Mentorship Program

This program will provide $3,000 of investment toward producer and writer fees, recording, and marketing. The purpose of this program is to provide newer artists (rated Artist General) the opportunity to work with and learn from established songwriters and producers.

Specific program guidelines, online applications, and application deadline will be forthcoming. Stay tuned for further announcements.

Artist III, Artist II, and Export Ready Business Capacity Program

Artist III, Artist II, and Export Ready Business Capacity Program: This program will provide $5,000 (Artist III, Export Ready Business) or $3,000 (Artist II) of investment toward a wide range of costs to cover a wide range of eligible activities. The purpose of the program is to help our exporting artists and businesses develop technological capacity, invest in software or training to be more prepared for the industry when restrictions begin lifting. Additional detail will be provided when applications are open.

Eligible costs include but are not limited to:

Recording costs (both at a studio and at home)
Professional Development (online courses to increase capacity in a wide
range of activities from online home shows, monetization techniques, to
recording techniques etc..)
Subscription Services for online concerts
Capital purchases (up to half of eligible costs) for necessary equipment to
record and perform and create from home.
Music Video production (both 3rd party or self made)

Specific program guidelines, online applications, and application deadline will be forthcoming. Stay tuned for further announcements.
