2019 Casino Nova Scotia Annual Artist in Residence Program

APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED - Casino Nova Scotia Annual Artist in Residence Program – $20,000 to support the winner’s career!

(Halifax, July 12 2019) Once again Casino Nova Scotia is calling on emerging Nova Scotian musicians to compete for the annual Artist in Residence program! This program will provide the selected musician or group with $20,000 in funding to assist with developing their career through recording, marketing, and live performance opportunities.  Music Nova Scotia is administering the program and will provide career path support.

Applications are now closed. 

Applicants must fill out an online application form, which can be found here.

Along with general contact information, web and social media links, applicants must have the following prepared before beginning the application; these elements are mandatory and must accompany your submission:

  1. Current biography.
  2. Current press photo.
  3. Statement on artists’ goals and career plan. You must provide an extensive plan outlining the coming year’s goals, plans, and career trajectory. Please use the career plan template provided here. Once you have completed the plan, attach the document to the application via the “attachments” tab at the bottom of the application form. 
  4. Web link to a music streaming site where a maximum of 3 songs are available; these songs will be evaluated by the jury. Please only link 3 songs - do not provide a link to a player which features more than 3 songs (e.g. a full album). 
  5. Lyric sheets for the 3 songs you will be submitting.

  1. Review of online applications and demos
  2. Interview with selected applicants
  3. Live performance of the finalists on September 20, 2019

Nominations Now Open for Music Nova Scotia Awards 2019

(July 2, 2019 Halifax, NS) Music Nova Scotia is now accepting applications for music and industry award nominations for the 2019 Music Nova Scotia Awards.

Nominations will be open until Tuesday, July 16th at 5:00 p.m. ADT. 

Please click HERE to read the 2019 Music Nova Scotia Awards Manual and ensure your submission(s) fulfill the criteria required for your nominee. The cost to submit is $30, HST included. Submissions can be paid for through Stripe, at the office by any method (debit, cash, etc.), or over the phone with Visa or MasterCard. To pay over the phone, please call (902) 423-6271. 

Music Nova Scotia may present awards in fifty (50) categories.

Music Awards (29 categories) 


All Nova Scotian artists who are members in good standing and have released recordings between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 are eligible to submit for the 2019 Music Nova Scotia Awards. You are not eligible to be nominated for the same recording two years in a row. 

There are nine (9) categories that do not require a recording: Acadian/Francophone Artist of the Year, African Nova Scotian Artist of the Year, Children’s Artist of the Year, DJ of the Year, Electronic Artist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Indigenous Artist of the Year, Musician of the Year & Digital Artist of the Year. 

Industry Awards (21 categories)

The Music Nova Scotia Industry Awards recognize the achievements and contributions of our industry professionals and leaders from across Nova Scotia over the past year. These awards celebrate the people and companies who are working to build a strong and vibrant Nova Scotia music industry. All Music Nova Scotia members in good standing are eligible to submit.

The final music and industry nominees will be decided upon by a peer jury of esteemed local professionals with expertise in the music industry of Nova Scotia. Music Nova Scotia staff are not members of this jury, and do not contribute to the selection of the final ballot for nominees.

Nominees who are members of Music Nova Scotia will receive a complimentary delegate pass to Nova Scotia Music Week 2019 (NSMW), which offers access to all showcases (subject to capacity) and the conference. 

Winners will be announced at Nova Scotia Music Week in Truro, NS, November 7-10, 2019.

Music Nova Scotia Job Opportunity - Conference Coordinator

Looking to work in the music industry? If so, this is an exciting opportunity for you! Music Nova Scotia is in the process of arranging a contract hire under the provincial Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program. The Job Creation Partnership (JCP) is a program designed to support projects that will provide LMDA eligible participants with meaningful work experience that will improve their employment prospects.  While project activities should benefit both the participant and the community, the focus of JCP is to aid participants in acquiring work experience that will assist them in finding full time employment.

This position is offered as part of the Job Creation Partnerships program of the Government of Nova Scotia. The JCP program must only be used to assist eligible individuals who:

  • are Canadian citizens or permanent residents legally entitled to work in Canada
  • meet the definition of an insured participant
  • are approved by Employment Nova Scotia under Section 25 of the Employment Insurance Act as LMDA eligible participants who are active EI claimants and
  • have a Return to Work Action Plan that identifies that the JCP work experience being considered supports a reasonable occupational goal for them.

To be LMDA eligible for Job Creation Partnership you must meet one of the following:

  • have a current Employment Insurance (EI) claim
  • have had an EI claim that ended within the last 60 months
  • have been employed with gross insurable earnings of $2000 or higher annually, in at least 5 of the last 10 years.

Job Title: Conference Coordinator 

Location: Halifax, NS 

Hours: 5 months – 37.5 hours weekly, with some evenings and weekends

Job Description:

The Conference Coordinator will provide support for the conference component of Nova Scotia Music Week 2019. Under the supervision and direction of the Conference Manager and the Events Manager, the Conference Coordinator will work independently and will liaise with the committee members and stakeholders to deliver the project. This person's main focus will be managing the volunteer base, coordinating delegate registration for NSMW.

Primary duties:

  • Assist in the coordination of NSMW conference seminars and workshops
  • Manage volunteer scheduling  (100+ volunteers) & Transportation
  • Oversee volunteer intake and liaise with the local Host Committee Volunteer Coordinator
  • Maintain accurate registration, contact and transportation databases
  • Coordinate registration campaigns
  • Monitor event registration
  • Set up, operate, and supervise the registration desk onsite
  • Conduct and enter data from evaluations from conference participants

Additional duties:

  • Adhere to the project's critical path and update it weekly
  • Prepare registration reports as requested
  • As requested, attend project activities and respond to any conference inquiries onsite during the events
  • Provide assistance in the distribution of NSMW promotional materials prior to and onsite
  • Contribute to the project's final report
  • Instruct volunteers for any conference related activities
  • Attend all professional development educational workshops Music Nova Scotia produces during employment period

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong literacy skills (reading/writing/comprehension/spelling & grammar)
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, Word
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Event/conference production/management experience
  • Experience in human resources or hospitality
  • Mac OS X experience
  • Google Apps (Gmail, Drive) experience
  • Music industry experience
  • Nonprofit experience
  • Ability to work well in groups
  • Comfort in a fast-paced environment
