More Than Words - Songwriting Workshops with Tom Wilson, Willie Nile, Alejandro Escovedo and Robyn Hitchcock

Two educational sessions, hosted by SOCAN's Tim Hardy, will take place at The Carleton Music Bar & Grill, 1685 Argyle St., Halifax, N.S. The sessions will provide information on the art of music composition, lyric writing, and the business of songwriting. Due to the overwhelming demand at last year's sessions, these workshops have been moved into the back half of the main dining room at the Carleton.

1st Session: Saturday, August 31st. Featuring Tom Wilson and Willie Nile1pm

2nd Session: Sunday, September 1st. Featuring Alejandro Escovedo and Robyn Hitchcock1pm

The workshop series is free and open to the public. There are only 40 spots available in each session, so please RSVP as soon as possible to rsvp@musicnovascotia.ca with the subject line “HUFF”. Spots will held for those who RSVP, and will given out on a first come, first served basis on the day of the workshops, should any remain. RSVP’s must be received no later than Friday, August 30th. "Maritimes to Memphis" International Blues Challenge Competition

Submissions are now open for the inaugural edition of the East Coast Blues
Society "Maritimes to Memphis" International Blues Challenge competition.
All Blues bands from The Maritimes are eligible to compete.
Submission deadline is Midnight Wednesday September 8th, 2013
Winning band and solo/duo act from the local competition will compete in
Memphis, TN in January 2014 for prizes and recognition.
What is the IBC?
The world's largest gathering of Blues acts representing an international
search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the
Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the
international stage.
The IBC is a judged "Battle of the Bands" in which
competitors take the stage and play a short set for a panel of judges. The
acts are judged based on an established set of criteria. Each Affiliate of
The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band and solo/duo act to
represent the organization at the IBC in Memphis, TN. Affiliates are
required to stage a regional preliminary IBC competition, where the winner
of that competition earns the right to represent the Affiliate at the
Memphis international competition.
In 2013, 125 bands and 80 solo/duo acts
entered, filling the clubs up and down Beale Street for the quarter-finals
on Wednesday and Thursday, the semi-finals on Friday and the finals at the
Orpheum Theater on Saturday. The 2014 International Blues Challenge will be
the 30th year of Blues musicians from around the world competing for cash,
prizes, and industry recognition.
