Kyla Jean is a new Singer/Songwriter from the North End of Halifax. Her debut EP “Pretty Word for Pain,” came out in 2023. Currently she studies Music therapy at Acadia. Her music and voice range in style and genre; most importantly, it tells a story.

Born and raised in Halifax, Kyla Jean began her songwriting journey in 2014 when her grandfather fell ill. She sat down at the piano and wrote about the grief her family was facing. Music had always been a source of joy, and from age 11 on, it became a haven to communicate shared human emotions.

Her voice and songs range in genre from folk to blues blended with strings and harmonies. Her Debut Ep, “Pretty Word for Pain,” is designed to take the listener on an emotional journey. To Kyla, music is a third space where people share a particular vulnerability with strangers and relate to each other. Her lyricism and composition showcase these universal experiences.

Kyla is going into music therapy at Acadia University, where she begins her journey this year. This year the focus for Kyla is on community and collabortion. She looks forward to meeting other musicians at Acadia, studying music and sharing more songs to listeners!
