Windsor, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer crafts intimate storytelling songs delivered with humour, heart, and '70s wood-paneled warmth.

Raised on the mud banks of the Avon River, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer was recruited as a backup singer while scooping ice cream at a music festival. She can make you feel knee-to-knee with her in a room of 5 or 500 with her butterscotch vibrato, deft fingerstyle guitar, church bench piano, sly humour, and ‘70s wood-paneled warmth. Her startling knack for telling intimate stories caught the attention of Canadian musical mentors and collaborators like David Francey, Dave Gunning, and Matt Andersen. She has become a sought-after studio musician, co-writer, producer, and workshop facilitator. Terra’s self-produced second album Chasing Rabbits won Music Nova Scotia’s 2021 Folk Recording of the Year and received nominations for ECMA Folk Recording of the Year and CFMA Contemporary Singer of the Year. Recently her song “Brick and Mortar” was named the winner of the Commonwealth Song Contest, out of 20,000 entries. In 2022 Terra toured across Canada and the UK with Ben Caplan in support of their joint record, Old News. She will join Canadian folk icon David Francey on tour to celebrate his upcoming album. “The real deal.” – Ron Sexsmith

“Terra Spencer is a sparklingly intelligent writer, open-hearted, insightful and eloquent. As natural a poet as ever put pen to paper and a soul as beautiful as her melodies would imply.”
– David Francey

“In “Old News,” Spencer weaves a mysterious aura around finely etched portraits of faces, places and faded memories, as only a songwriter of her imminent promise can. Almost in cinematic slow motion, a series of characters materialize, share their hard-won lessons and dissolve, cross fade into another.” – Douglas McLean, Great Dark Wonder

” Spencer has outdone her previous gem, 2020’s multiple award-winner Chasing Rabbits, her songwriting even more outstanding. One beauty follows another, no two are alike musically or thematically. She has a wonderful perspective on people, a huge tenderness, and seemingly limitless empathy. Yes, it’s sentimental as all get out, filled with old people, old dogs, old teachers, and lovers parting as friends, but the songs will melt the hardest hearts.” – Bob Mersereau, Top 100 Canadian Blog
